Iceland

The rugged beauty of the country, the untouched and untamed volcanic landscape, and the friendliness and hospitality of the Icelanders immediately took his fancy. Later, numerous trips followed with his wife Dr. Gisela Schulte-Daxbök (among others for their honeymoon), as well as with their sons.

The purchase of an antique map of Iceland in 1975 was the starting point for building up the world’s largest private collection of maps of Iceland, which now comprises more than 120 maps dating from 1547-1808. In order to make the impressive collection accessible to the public, it was donated to the City of Akureyri in the north of Iceland in 2014, and has since been exhibited in the Akureyri Museum as “Land Ahoy! – Antique maps of Iceland 1547-1808 – Schulte Collection”. Even today, his personal connection with Iceland, as well as numerous friendships, regularly takes him back. On July 24, 2019, his wife Dr. Gisela Schulte-Daxbök was buried at Lögmannshlíð Cemetery in Akureyri.
